The Ide
The Golden Arrow
“Whether clothed in silver or gleaming gold, the Ide brings elegance, speed and quiet beauty to the waters it calls home.”
Species Profile
The Ide (Leuciscus idus) is a graceful member of the carp family, naturally found in the rivers and lakes of mainland Europe and western Asia. Although not native to Britain in the wild, it is well known through its beautiful golden colour variety, the Golden Orfe, which has become a familiar sight in ornamental lakes, estate waters and garden ponds.
With its streamlined body and effortless swimming style, the Ide is built for speed. The Golden Orfe, with its brilliant golden-orange colouring, has become one of the most admired ornamental freshwater fish, bringing movement and colour to ponds throughout Britain.
Whether silver or gold, the Ide is a fish of remarkable elegance.
Clive’s Story
The first time I saw a shoal of Golden Orfe cruising through a clear ornamental lake, I was captivated.
They moved effortlessly through the water like shafts of sunlight, always active, always exploring. Unlike Carp, which often searched quietly along the bottom, these fish seemed to spend every moment on the move.
Although few anglers set out specifically to catch them, they have always fascinated me.
Watching a group of Golden Orfe weaving gracefully beneath the surface reminds us that freshwater fish are not only admired for their sporting qualities but also for their beauty.
They bring life, colour and movement wherever they swim.
Natural History
The Ide is a highly active shoaling fish that prefers clean, well-oxygenated water.
In its natural range it inhabits rivers and large lakes, feeding on insects, aquatic larvae, crustaceans, plant material and small fish.
The Golden Orfe has inherited these same characteristics and thrives in spacious ponds with excellent water quality.
Unlike many pond fish that spend much of their time feeding on the bottom, Golden Orfe are frequently seen swimming close to the surface, making them one of the most visible and attractive inhabitants of ornamental waters.

Behind the Song
When writing The Golden Arrow, I wanted the music to reflect the elegance and constant movement of this beautiful fish.
The melody flows lightly, almost dancing across the water, while the chorus captures the brilliance of sunlight reflecting from the golden scales as the fish glides effortlessly beneath the surface.
It is a joyful song, celebrating beauty, grace and the simple pleasure of watching these magnificent fish in crystal-clear water.
Conservation
Although the Golden Orfe is an ornamental variety, it still depends upon clean, well-managed aquatic environments.
Maintaining good water quality, avoiding overcrowding and providing adequate oxygen help these beautiful fish live long and healthy lives.
Their popularity has also encouraged many people to take a greater interest in freshwater wildlife and pond conservation, helping to create habitats that benefit many other aquatic species.
Clive’s Reflection
Not every freshwater jewel lives in a wild river.
Some shine quietly in carefully managed ponds, bringing pleasure to everyone who pauses to watch them.
The Golden Orfe has always reminded me that beauty deserves just as much admiration as strength.
Its graceful movements and shimmering colours brighten even the stillest waters.
That is why, to me, the Ide—and its beautiful golden form, the Golden Orfe—will always be The Golden Arrow.
“Sometimes the brightest treasures are those that simply bring beauty into the world.”
