The Sea Trout (Sewin)

The Sewin Returns

“Each year, guided by an ancient instinct, the Sewin returns to the rivers of Wales—a timeless journey that has inspired anglers for generations.”

Species Profile

The Sea Trout (Salmo trutta), known throughout Wales as the Sewin, is one of Britain’s most beautiful and elusive freshwater fish. Born in the clean, gravelly streams of our rivers, it spends its early years in freshwater before migrating to the sea, where it grows stronger and more powerful.

Unlike the Atlantic Salmon, the Sewin often returns to its home river under the cover of darkness, adding to its reputation as one of the most mysterious fish in British waters.

Powerful, beautifully marked and highly prized by anglers, the Sewin has become a symbol of wild rivers, summer evenings and the enduring rhythm of nature.

Clive’s Story

Growing up in Wales, the Sewin was always spoken about with great respect.

There was something almost magical about this fish. Unlike many forms of angling that took place during daylight, Sewin fishing belonged to the night.

As darkness settled over the river, everything changed. The sounds became sharper, the water seemed to whisper, and every cast carried the hope that somewhere beneath the surface a powerful fish was making its way home.

There is a special feeling that only a summer night beside a Welsh river can bring.

The stars above.

The gentle murmur of flowing water.

The sudden swirl of a fish breaking the silence.

Those are memories that stay with an angler for a lifetime.

Natural History

The Sea Trout begins life as a Brown Trout before undergoing a remarkable transformation known as smoltification.

Its body becomes brighter and more streamlined as it prepares for life in the sea.

After feeding in coastal waters and estuaries, the Sewin returns to its native river to spawn, often travelling many miles upstream.

Unlike Atlantic Salmon, many Sea Trout survive spawning and return to the sea before repeating this incredible journey several times during their lives.

This remarkable resilience makes the Sewin one of Britain’s most fascinating migratory fish.

Behind the Song

When writing The Sewin Returns, I wanted the music to capture the anticipation of a summer evening beside a Welsh river.

The melody reflects the mystery of the Sewin’s return from the sea, building gently before bursting into life with the excitement of a fish taking the fly.

It is a song about homecoming, perseverance and the timeless cycle of nature.

More than anything, it celebrates the remarkable instinct that guides the Sewin back to the very river where its life began.

Conservation

Like the Atlantic Salmon, the Sewin depends upon healthy rivers throughout every stage of its life.

Clean spawning gravels, unpolluted water and unrestricted passage between river and sea are essential if these magnificent fish are to continue their annual migrations.

Across Britain, river trusts, conservation groups and volunteers are working to restore habitats, remove barriers and improve water quality.

Protecting the Sewin means protecting the rivers that have shaped our natural heritage for centuries.

Clive’s Reflection

Whenever I think about the Sewin, I think about home.

No matter how far it travels, it always finds its way back to the river where its life began.

That remarkable instinct has inspired generations of anglers and reminds us that some journeys are written deep within nature itself.

To stand beside a Welsh river on a warm summer evening, knowing that somewhere beneath the surface a Sewin is returning, is one of angling’s greatest privileges.

That is why, to me, the Sea Trout will always be The Sewin Returns.
