The Whitefish
The Silver Ghost
“Gliding silently through the deep, cold lakes of Britain, the Whitefish is a graceful survivor from another age, rarely seen but never forgotten.”
Species Profile
The Whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) is one of Britain’s most elegant native freshwater fish. Closely related to the Vendace and Powan, it is a survivor from the last Ice Age, inhabiting a small number of deep, cold lakes where the water remains clear and rich in oxygen.
Its slender silver body, delicate scales and graceful movements have earned it a reputation as one of Britain’s most beautiful yet least-known freshwater species.
Because it spends much of its life in the depths of these glacial lakes, few people ever have the privilege of seeing a Whitefish in its natural environment.
Clive’s Story
There are fish that command attention the moment they break the surface.
Then there are fish like the Whitefish.
It lives a quiet existence, hidden beneath the deep waters of Britain’s northern lakes.
That mystery has always fascinated me.
To know that these fish have survived since the glaciers retreated thousands of years ago fills me with admiration.
Their peaceful existence reminds us that not every wonder of nature seeks the spotlight.
Some simply continue their ancient lives, unnoticed by most, yet every bit as remarkable.
Natural History
Whitefish thrive in deep, cold lakes where temperatures remain low throughout the year.
They feed primarily on tiny crustaceans, aquatic insects and plankton drifting through the open water.
During late autumn and early winter they move into shallower areas to spawn, scattering their eggs over clean gravel and stony lake beds.
Because they require exceptionally clean, well-oxygenated water, Whitefish are highly sensitive to pollution, climate change and declining water quality.
Their presence is often regarded as a sign of a healthy lake ecosystem.

Behind the Song
When writing The Silver Ghost, I wanted the music to capture the quiet elegance of this elusive fish.
The gentle melody reflects the stillness of deep mountain lakes, while the flowing chorus evokes the image of a silver shape drifting silently beneath the surface.
The song celebrates the mystery of a fish that few people ever see, reminding us that some of Britain’s greatest natural treasures remain hidden in the depths.
Conservation
The Whitefish faces increasing pressure from climate change, warming waters and habitat disturbance.
Because its populations are isolated within only a few lakes, each one is especially important.
Conservation programmes focus on protecting water quality, monitoring populations and preserving the unique environments upon which these remarkable fish depend.
Protecting the Whitefish also safeguards the many other species that share these fragile lake ecosystems.
Clive’s Reflection
The Whitefish teaches us that beauty often exists beyond our sight.
It asks for nothing except clean water and the freedom to continue a life that began thousands of years ago.
Whenever I think about the Whitefish, I imagine a quiet silver figure moving effortlessly through the depths, unseen but always present.
Perhaps that is why it has earned such an unforgettable name.
That is why, to me, the Whitefish will always be The Silver Ghost.
“The rarest sights are often those that leave the deepest memories.”
